The Zamfara State Government has expressed deep concern over the rampant cutting down of trees for charcoal production, which has exacerbated the ongoing deforestation crisis in the state.

In a statement by Abubakar Aliyu, Information Officer of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Commissioner for Environment, Kasimu Sani Kaura, revealed that some individuals are engaging in the illegal practice of cutting down trees to produce charcoal by burning wood.

Kaura emphasized that such activities pose a significant threat to the state’s efforts to combat desertification and soil erosion.

He highlighted the environmental dangers of deforestation, explaining its harmful effects on the ecosystem.

The Commissioner urged residents to refrain from indiscriminate tree cutting, noting that trees play a crucial role in combating global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide, storing carbon, and releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere.

He called on the public to support the government’s environmental conservation initiatives to ensure a sustainable future for Zamfara State.
