Obi of Uruagu Nnewi urges Ndigbo to invest at home for devt, youth employment

Igbo Presidency: How best to realise it

By Chimaobi Nwaiwu

The Obi of Uruagu, Nnewi, His Highness Obi Afam Obi, has called on wealthy Ndigbo to bring their investments home to spur rapid development and create jobs for unemployed youths in Igboland.

This message was echoed during the handing-over ceremony of a community hall built by Chief Chinedu Mmadubuike, Chairman of the Anyafulugo Foundation, for the Obiagu Community in Uruagu, Nnewi North Local Government Area, Anambra State.

Obi Afam Obi emphasized that if successful Igbo individuals invested even half of their wealth in their communities, many youths engaging in social vices would be gainfully employed and contribute positively to society. He highlighted that true philanthropy begins at home, urging wealthy Ndigbo to follow the example set by Chief Mmadubuike.

In recognition of his contributions, Chief Mmadubuike was awarded the Chieftaincy title of “Ogbu-Efi Onwa na Enye Obiagu Ife” (The Sun that Gives Obiagu Light). The title reflects the significant impact of his philanthropic efforts, which include constructing the community hall, tarring community roads, offering scholarships to hundreds of indigent students, and building homes for widows and the homeless through the Anyafulugo Foundation.

Chief Emmanuel Muoma, the Obi Obiagu Nnewi, praised the philanthropist for his tireless efforts and called on the youth to emulate his generosity.

The Chairman of the Obiagu Community Development Association (OCDA), Lagos branch, Mr. Obinna Robinson Okoli, described Chief Mmadubuike as a man with a deep sense of community service. Dr. Sir Douglas Nkemdili, a member of the Igwe Nnewi Cabinet, also lauded Mmadubuike’s contributions, noting that while many are wealthy, few take tangible steps to uplift their communities.

In his appreciation speech, Chief Mmadubuike expressed gratitude for the Chieftaincy title, viewing it as motivation for continued service. He urged Igbo youths to remain focused, honest, and hardworking while taking up the responsibility of supporting and developing their communities, both where they live and where they hail from.

The ceremony began with an interdenominational church service and the dedication of the hall to God. Clergy members, including Rev. Udoka Alutu of Miracle Anglican Church Obiagu, Rev. Fr. Patrick Ohazuluike of Our Lady of Fatima Akaboezem Parish, and Archbishop Emma David Okaforagu, led the prayers.

This event marked another milestone in the advancement of Uruagu, Nnewi, and set a standard for other philanthropists to follow in promoting communal development and youth empowerment in Igboland.
