ABUJA – Young Nigerians from the northern region, under the aegis of the Arewa Youth Movement, have expressed strong support for the Federal Government’s proposed tax reform bill, asserting that it will improve Nigeria’s fiscal landscape and create opportunities for economic growth, particularly in the North.
The group highlighted that the bill has the potential to enhance revenue generation, promote infrastructure development, and reduce poverty and inequality in the region.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Sa’ad Muhammad, President of the Arewa Youth Movement, outlined how the bill could benefit Northern states. He explained that the bill would allow the region to retain a larger share of its internally generated revenue, enabling increased investment in critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and healthcare facilities.
Muhammad also emphasized that the bill would create a more attractive business environment in the North, encouraging investment and improving regional economic competitiveness.
The Arewa Youth Movement also highlighted the broader national benefits of the tax reform, such as expanding the tax base, reducing rates, and improving compliance. This, they argued, would enhance government revenue, providing the means to fund infrastructure projects, social welfare programs, and human capital development. Furthermore, they noted that the bill could help diversify Nigeria’s economy away from oil dependence, spurring growth in agriculture, manufacturing, and services.
Despite these potential benefits, Northern elites—including governors, senators, and traditional leaders—have expressed concerns about the bill’s impact. However, the Arewa Youths have dismissed these objections, calling their bluff and urging the National Assembly to expedite the bill’s passage.
They argue that the tax reform is crucial for fostering equitable growth and ensuring a sustainable economic future for all Nigerians, especially those in the North.
Muhammad said, “We, the Arewa Youth Movement, wholeheartedly support the proposed tax reform bill in Nigeria. The tax reform bill is particularly significant for the Northern region. It will promote economic development, create jobs, and increase revenue generation in the North.”
He further stated, “By promoting economic growth, the tax reform bill will help reduce poverty and inequality in the Northern region, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We urge the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the tax reform bill to benefit all Nigerians, particularly those in the Northern region.”
Muhammad concluded, “We believe that this legislation has the potential to transform Nigeria’s economy, promoting sustainable growth and ensuring a brighter future for all citizens.”
