The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of General Godwin Osagie Abbe (rtd.), describing him as a rare gem, a nationalist, and a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in the unity and development of Nigeria.
In a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Dr. Obiuwevbi Ominimini, PANDEF lauded the late General’s unparalleled service to the nation, citing his illustrious records as the Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, Minister of Defence, and Minister of Interior.
According to Amb. Godknows Igali, OON, the National Chairman of PANDEF, Gen. Abbe’s distinguished career was underpinned by his exceptional intellectual capacity, honed at prestigious institutions such as the United States Army Infantry School, Fort Moore, Georgia, the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College, and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru.
“His exemplary leadership as the Commandant of the National War College, as it was then called, remains a reference point not just in Nigeria but across Africa,” Amb. Igali stated.
General Abbe, who joined the Nigerian Army in 1967 during the turbulent civil war, was celebrated for his bravery and unwavering commitment to national unity. His service, marked by integrity and dedication, saw him rise to the rank of Major General before his retirement. As the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Nigerian Army, he was admired for his selflessness and commitment to the welfare of his troops.
PANDEF emphasized that General Abbe’s legacy extends beyond his family, Edo State, and the Niger Delta region, noting that his contributions to Nigeria’s unity and progress will be remembered by the entire nation.
“We condole with his family, the people of Edo State, and all Nigerians over this irreparable loss. General Abbe was a patriot, mentor, and trailblazer whose impact will endure for generations,” the statement concluded.
PANDEF prayed for the repose of the late General’s soul, expressing hope that his legacy would inspire future generations of leaders.
