… Urges Fair Benefits for Niger Delta

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Shell Petroleum Development Company for successfully concluding the $5 billion Bonga North Deep Offshore Oil Deal, describing it as a landmark achievement that will enhance Nigeria’s energy security.

In a press briefing at PANDEF’s Liaison Office in Abuja, Ambassador Godknows Igali, the National Chairman of the socio-cultural body, lauded the technical teams involved in the project, particularly under the leadership of the Minister of Petroleum, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri. He said the deal would significantly boost Nigeria’s oil production capacity and create economic opportunities, particularly for the youth of the Niger Delta region.

“This groundbreaking project underscores the government’s commitment to revitalizing the oil and gas sector,” Igali said. “The Niger Delta people are ready to support initiatives aimed at increasing production, as this will spur economic growth and job creation nationwide.”

Environmental Concerns Raised

While praising the deal, PANDEF urged Shell to prioritize environmental sustainability in its operations, cautioning against a repeat of the 2011 Bonga South oil spill, which caused severe pollution in several Niger Delta communities.

“Shell must ensure the highest level of environmental integrity in managing the Bonga North field,” Igali warned. “The Niger Delta cannot afford another environmental disaster, given the devastating impact such incidents have on our people and ecosystem.”

Advocacy for Regional Development

PANDEF also called on Shell and the Federal Government to ensure that the people of the Niger Delta benefit equitably from the project. Highlighting decades of neglect despite the region’s immense contributions to the national economy, Igali advocated for measures to directly support the coastal communities affected by oil exploration and production.

“This is a critical opportunity to address historical injustices,” he said. “The government and Shell must consider establishing new logistics bases in the area and implementing initiatives that directly benefit the Niger Delta people.”

Commitment to Collaboration

Igali reaffirmed PANDEF’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for the growth of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. He emphasized the forum’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government, regional political leaders, and community stakeholders to ensure that the sector delivers on its potential for the national economy and the South-South region.

“PANDEF remains dedicated to ensuring that oil and gas projects are executed with fairness and sustainability,” he said.

The statement was signed by PANDEF’s spokesperson, Chief (Sir) Obiuwevbi Ominimini, on December 17, 2024.
