The National Orientation Agency (NOA) on Thursday launched a sensitization campaign in Sokoto to address five critical issues pivotal to Nigeria’s unity, well-being, and development.

Speaking at a press conference held at the agency’s secretariat, the Director-General of NOA, Mr. Larry Isah Olumelu, represented by Mr. John Bala, a Director at the NOA headquarters, emphasized the importance of nationwide mobilization.

“We are commencing a nationwide campaign to unite Nigerians in addressing these pressing issues and fostering a more informed, secure, and ethical society. These challenges require collective action and active participation from all Nigerians,” Olumelu said.

The campaign aims to complement efforts by health authorities, coinciding with World HIV/AIDS Day. Olumelu reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the availability and accessibility of antiretroviral drugs while combating stigma and discrimination.

“Citizens must take advantage of services provided by the government, practice responsible health behaviors, and support those living with HIV/AIDS,” he said, adding that the campaign will be spread nationwide through diverse platforms.

Security remains a federal government priority. Efforts include strengthening security architecture through better equipment, training, funding, and the deployment of surveillance technology. Citizens are urged to report suspicious activities and cooperate with law enforcement to combat criminal activities.

Addressing the erosion of values, Olumelu called for rejecting unethical practices driven by economic hardship and the desire for quick wealth, especially during the Yuletide season.

He highlighted youth empowerment programs like the National Social Investment Program (NSIP) and skill acquisition initiatives as alternatives. “Citizens must embrace integrity, hard work, and government initiatives to achieve sustainable progress,” he added.

As Nigeria commemorates World Human Rights Day, the campaign will focus on strengthening frameworks to combat gender-based violence, child trafficking, and other violations. Citizens were urged to respect the rights of others and report violations to authorities while recognizing their civic responsibilities.

The proposed Tax Reform Bill before the National Assembly seeks to harmonize and simplify Nigeria’s tax system.

Olumelu explained, “The Nigeria Tax Bill amalgamates existing laws on taxation and will repeal 11 outdated laws. Once passed, it will eliminate double taxation and ensure transparency, using tax revenues to improve essential public services such as schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.”

State NOA Director Babangida Kurfi assured that the sensitization campaign would reach grassroots communities through local government-level Community Mobilization Assistants.

The campaign reflects the agency’s commitment to addressing national challenges while empowering citizens to play an active role in Nigeria’s development.
