Abuja – The International Society of Diplomats (ISD) officially launched its Nigerian chapter during an inaugural assembly held in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s diplomatic history.

The event featured the induction of distinguished members and highlighted Nigeria’s growing prominence on the global diplomatic stage.

Speaking at the event recently in Abuja, the Country Director and Head of Mission, Prof. Edet B. Ekpenyong, emphasized the society’s commitment to fostering international cooperation and sustainable development.

He described the occasion as a historic step in building partnerships to address global challenges, noting the theme, “Diplomacy and International Cooperation: Pivotal to Sustainable Peace and Development.”

In his keynote address, the Secretary-General of the ISD, Ambassador Manuel Fernandez, lauded Nigeria’s strategic role in international diplomacy, emphasizing its growing influence in addressing global issues like climate change, economic growth, and security.

He credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership for advancing Nigeria’s diplomatic standing and for securing Nigeria as the host of ISD’s African headquarters.

The inaugural lecture delivered by Dr. Ndolamb Ngokwey, D.R. Congo’s Ambassador to the UK, who represented by Dr. Matthew Ogwuche of the National Open University, underscored the importance of diplomacy in managing global complexities and promoting peace amidst increasing international actors, including state and non-state entities.

“The society aims to provide the expertise and framework necessary to navigate the evolving challenges in global diplomacy, similar to how professional bodies like ICAN and ANAN support accountants,” Dr. Ogwuche noted.

The ISD, founded in Canada in 2020, seeks to engage diplomats, scholars, and practitioners in creating solutions for global issues. The Nigerian chapter aims to collaborate with government institutions and stakeholders to strengthen peace, cooperation, and sustainable development in the country and beyond.

The event concluded with a pledge by members to advance the society’s objectives while fostering partnerships for a just and peaceful world.
