The Lagos State Government has signed a Letter of Intent, LOI, with a British Company reputable for the conversion of plastic waste to energy as part of efforts to reduce plastic waste in the state and facilitate its conversion.
Speaking during the singing of the LOI, at Alausa, Ikeja, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, said the intent will grant access to the Abule-Egba landfill for the collection of flexible plastic waste for advanced chemical recycling.

Wahab, explained that the project is a pilot one with GreenDeal Chemicals and Recycling and Greenback Recycling Technologies Limited.

The Commissioner said the organisation known for the transformation and management of chemicals as well as the promotion of a circular and sustainable economy will work at the decommissioned Abule-Egba dumpsite in the state

He said the project will border around the collection of all flexible plastic waste arriving at the Abule-Egba landfill site that will be recycled to generate energy.

Wahab said the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, will make available waste deliveries which will serve as feedstock for the four modules of chemical recycling unit to be installed at the site for the duration of the concession.

He said the four modules that would be deployed will require 32 metric tonnes of flexible plastic waste per day as feed stock for chemical recycling from selected and sorted plastic waste.

Wahab explained that the initial four modules installed will process 11,680MT of plastic waste per annum which translate to the prevention of 75,920kg of CO2 pollution, whilst creating jobs and decent wage for approximately 1,100 waste pickers in the state.

The Commissioner said following the success of the pilot project, additional modules will be deployed and installed in order to scale-up the volume of processed plastic waste.

Chief Executive Officer, GreenDeal Chemicals and Recycling, Dr. Akintayo Adisa while speaking, said Green Deal is an initiative that sets out to reduce waste, increase recycling, and promote sustainable practices.

He expressed the willingness of his company to work with the state government to actualize the circular economy plan of State.
