As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Anniversary, the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has issued a rallying call to its members, urging them to remain united in the face of economic hardship.
Comr. Meshach Anthony Nwankwo, NAUS Deputy National President (National and Campus Affairs) Elect, emphasized that this is not a time for passivity or complacency, but rather for strategic dialogue and engagement.
According to him, the nation’s economic reality has disproportionately affected university students, who bear a significant part of the weight.
“Certain policies aimed at reform have placed undue pressure on students.
“However, NAUS is committed to advocating for solutions that cater to the needs of university students and the youth.
“Through relentless advocacy and genuine dialogue, NAUS has engaged the government, demanding meaningful reforms grounded in critical research.
“The association prioritizes the true needs of Nigerian students, ensuring their representation is not compromised by political agendas.
“In light of economic reforms, NAUS encourages students to utilize government initiatives like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to mitigate the effects of increased school fees and living costs.
“The association appreciates the government’s provision of CNG buses for students but advocates for extending this palliative measure to grassroots levels, recognizing the link between mobility and productivity.
“With over 4.2 million university students united, NAUS remains purpose-driven, amplifying their voices to ensure their resolve is heard and uncompromised,” the statement added.
The group further made key demands, saying: “Extension of palliative measures to grassroots levels. Increased accessibility to government initiatives like NELFUND.
“Meaningful reforms addressing students’ needs. Uncompromised representation of Nigerian students”
