A chieftain of the prominent figure in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has called on the Federal Government to leverage on Nigeria’s independence anniversary to provide much-needed relief to its citizens.
In a statement issued on Monday, Ajadi urged the government to demonstrate its commitment to true independence by taking actions that alleviate the economic struggles of its citizens.
He called for a comprehensive reshaping of the economy and solutions to the soaring prices of petroleum products.
Ajadi noted that true independence should free the nation from reliance on foreign countries for crude oil refining.
He expressed concern over the country’s poor electricity supply, which forces many Nigerians to rely on costly diesel and petrol generators, further exacerbating their financial burdens.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the Minister of Petroleum, must address the current fuel scarcity It is disheartening to see fuel shortages just as Nigerians are experiencing a slight reduction in food prices.”
“We find ourselves back at square one, facing high transportation costs due to the rising prices of petroleum.”
He urged the President to take immediate action to lower petroleum prices and find ways to reduce food costs, stressing that many Nigerians struggle to afford three meals a day.
“We cannot continue like this; the President must summon the courage to find lasting solutions to the high cost of living across the country.”
Reflecting on the optimism surrounding Nigeria’s independence in 1960, Ajadi lamented that after 64 years, Nigerians still await relief from their struggles.
He called on the government to heed the protesters’ demands, asserting that their intentions are to benefit all Nigerians.
Ajadi also appealed to former Presidents and other statesmen to step forward and contribute to resolving the nation’s challenges.
“The current situation should be viewed beyond politics; former leaders must come together to offer solutions to the issues plaguing the country,” he added.
