The Coalition of South East Youths for Democracy (CESYD) has clarified that Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Benjamin Kalu, played a pivotal role in the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC). This comes after claims that the bill was introduced in the 8th National Assembly.
CESYD described attempts to diminish Kalu’s contributions as “unfortunate” and “mischievous”. The group highlighted Kalu’s instrumental role in sponsoring and ensuring the passage of the SEDC bill, from its first reading on October 12, 2023, to its signing into law by President Bola Tinubu on July 23, 2024.
CESYD challenged Dr Josef Onoh, who allegedly attempted to downplay Kalu’s efforts, to provide evidence contradicting the verifiable facts surrounding Kalu’s involvement. The coalition emphasized Kalu’s leadership and commitment to the South East’s development are undeniable.
The group recalled the key dates in the bill’s passage, including its first reading, second reading, presentation, consideration, and final reading in both the House of Representatives and Senate. CESYD praised Kalu for prioritizing Igbo interests and issues, stating that his contributions have been instrumental in addressing the region’s sense of marginalization.
CESYD urged individuals to refrain from spreading misinformation and instead focus on constructive contributions to the region’s development.
