Vocational Training: Foundation empowers women with disabilities in Abuja

The El Echad Foundation, in partnership with Massey College and the Rotary Club of Toronto Bay-Bloor, has implemented a vocational training program for women with disabilities in the Karonmajigi community, Abuja.

The program aimed to equip 10 unemployed mothers with disabilities with essential skills to start their own small businesses.

“Our focus is to equip these women with essential skills for entrepreneurship and financial independence.

Providing a source of income for persons with disabilities is crucial in helping them meet the needs of their families amidst economic pressures,” said Otuto Amarauche Chukwu, Cofounder and Secretary of El Echad Foundation.

The program trained participants in the production, packaging, and sale of sanitary products, and each trainee received a business startup grant and resources to kickstart their businesses.

Salamatu Ibrahim, a participant, expressed her gratitude, saying, “The skills I have learned will not only be useful in my home but will also enable me to pay my children’s school fees with the profits I make from my business.”

Emir Suleiman Muhammad, the Emir of the Persons with Disabilities community in Karonmajigi, praised the foundation for its kindness and support, committing to work together as a community to ensure the participants’ businesses succeed.

Mr. Muhammad Datani, the Emir’s secretary, also commended the foundation for its thoughtful and sustainable approach, appealing for continued support for the community.

The El Echad vocational training program promotes growth within marginalized communities and makes a difference in the lives of those often overlooked.
