Wants Sponsors of Political Violent Prosecuted
By Daniel Abia
The Rivers state faction of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has indicated willingness to fully participate in the processes leading to the conduct and field candidates in the forthcoming local government elections.
Recall that on Monday the Rivers state independent electoral commission, RSIEC, unveiled the timetable for the scheduled election on October 5, 2024.
Speaking at a stakeholders” meeting at the Commission’s office in Port Harcourt, the state capital, RSIEC chairman Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retired) promised that the election would be free, fair and nonviolent.
In a statement released in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the spokesman of the factional APC, Darlington Nwauju said he “welcomes the decision of the management of the State’s Independent Election Commission (RSIEC) to engage stakeholders’ views and publishing a timeline that respects the extant Law No. 2 of 1998 which is consistent with the CFR 1999 (as amended).
“Our commendation of this decision stems from the fact that the umpire did not pander to the confusionist’s agenda of tenure elongation for elected council officials who took Oath of Office to serve for 3 years.
“Again, we wish to state that we would never have been part of a self-serving agenda to abrogate the rights of the people of Rivers State to freely choose their leaders at the third tier of government.
“Therefore, sticking with the popular and widely accepted law guiding the conduct of local government elections in the state is a welcome idea.
“We wish to call on all stakeholders in the Rivers project, especially security agencies not to allow political merchants continue to defy security advisories inorder to paint an utopian picture of insecurity and lawlessness in our state”, Nwauju said.
Darlington Nwauju demanded that “all politically exposed persons linked to the sponsorship of acts of violence be exposed and punished according to law. Rivers State is not a Banana Republic and our people have a right to good governance, peace and development”, he said.
