Plateau fixes October 9 for Local Govt election

Jos – The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, PLASIEC has fixed October 9, 2024, to conduct elections in the 17 local government areas of the State.

PLASIEC Chairman, Plangji Cishak announced the date and timetable for the said elections during a press conference held on Wednesday at the PLASIEC headquarters in Jos where he assured of conducting a credible election which will start from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm across the 17 local government areas.

He said, “In compliance with Part IV, Section 16 (1) and 22 (1) of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) Law, 2016, Section 197 (1 and 2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended 2023), and the Electoral Act 2022, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to notify the leadership of all political parties and the public that elections shall be conducted in 17 local government councils in Plateau State on Wednesday, 9th October 2024 between 8 am and 3 pm.

“Consequently, all prospective candidates are expected to obtain nomination forms for the election into the offices of Chairmen and Councillors of the 17 local government councils from PLASIEC headquarters in Jos from Friday, August 9, 2024, to Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

“All political parties and stakeholders are hereby enjoined to give their support and cooperation to PLASIEC, to organize, undertake, and supervise a free, fair, credible, and transparent local government council election in Plateau State.”

The detailed election timetable includes key dates for campaign activities, party primaries, submission and verification of nomination forms, and the final list of candidates. Campaigns are set to commence on July 12, 2024, and the final day for campaigning will be October 7, 2024.
