Legal Aid Council to represent 42 Kuje prisons inmates in court

The Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, LACON, is to represent 42 indigent inmates of Kuje prisons, Abuja in court.

The council’s effort is to help decongest prisons across the country by giving hope to the voiceless citizens of Nigeria and the awaiting trails inmates in line with the agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Acting Director in-charge of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Office, Okwuegbu Egenti, dropped the hint when the council interviewed 42 inmates of Abuja prisons, whose offences were majorly drugs related, theft, murder and conspiracy.

Egenti, who led the team of lawyers and paralegals drew attention to a very pathetic case of Mr. Adamu Lawal, a keke driver, who claimed to be a victim of circumstances in the sense that he was sent to Chisco Park by one Mr. Mohammed Abdullahi to collect a way bill, which happens to be drug substance and on his way back, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, operatives, who set the tray as they have previously arrested the Chisco driver now picked him up and he has so far spend 14 months in the detention without bail.

He added that another case for concern was a case of a man, who was dumped in the prison because he was unable to provide food for the wife due to the hardship in the country and the woman eventually died and he was accused for murder.

“No fewer than 30 inmates interviewed were youths, who smoke and peddle in various kinds of drugs and most of them have spent over six months before coming to Kuje prison,” he added.

Also, LACON on the ground assessment with Mr. Jacob Ogbe, the welfare officer, saw a treatment centre for drug victims established five years ago and at the end of their treatment, certificate are issued to show that they have gone for treatment on drug abuse.

The Director General through the acting Director FCT Office, called on the Federal Government to give hope to the Nigeria youths by building industries, so that our teaming youths in various prisons can integrate fine into the society by having work to do, when they finished their various terms.
