BOND Awards: Celebrating resilience and excellence in Nigerian Diaspora in Canada

Modupe Ehinlaiye

The Bond Awards, an initiative by Modupe Ehinlaiye, a dual-qualified lawyer and talk show host, is set to highlight the extraordinary contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora. “Bond” stands for Best Of Nigerians in Diaspora, and these awards aim to build a legacy that inspires future generations and testifies to the indomitable spirit of the Nigerian people.

The Bond Awards are designed to honor the incredible journeys of Nigerians who, despite facing the challenges of a new culture, language, and the weight of stereotypes, rise, innovate, and excel. These awards aim to change negative narratives and perceptions about Nigerians living abroad.

This September, the Bond Awards will spotlight extraordinary Nigerians in Canada who have turned their dreams into reality. The event will be held at the Mississauga Convention Centre and will be more than just an awards ceremony—it will be a celebration of resilience, innovation, and excellence.

Every African embarking on this journey carries a story of grit and determination. Dr. Chika Stacy Oriuwa’s path exemplifies this spirit. Rising above challenges and stereotypes in the medical field, Dr. Oriuwa made history as the first Black valedictorian at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine in 2020. Her leadership and advocacy have made her a key contributor to Ontario’s Black Youth Action Plan, and her influence extends globally as a TIME Next Gen Leader. Dr. Oriuwa’s inspiring journey is symbolized by the Barbie doll created in her likeness, which aims to inspire young girls to pursue careers in medicine.

Kingsley Madu is another shining example of Black excellence. Coming from a financial system in Nigeria that does not operate on credit, Madu broke through barriers to establish Expedier Inc., a fintech startup providing financial solutions to BIPOC communities. His company has been recognized as a top 12 Fintech by Platform Calgary. As a member of the Google for Startups Accelerator, Madu’s story is one of innovation and relentless pursuit of better opportunities for his community.

These stories deconstruct limiting narratives and perceptions about Nigerians in the diaspora. They show that Black excellence shines the brightest even in the face of adversity, exemplifying the grit and brilliance of Nigerian trailblazers in North America.

The evening will feature distinguished guests, including entrepreneurs, academics, artists, and community leaders, each with a story that reflects the essence of what it means to shine in the diaspora. Attendees can look forward to inspiring speeches, captivating performances, and the chance to connect with trailblazers shaping the future.

According to the convener, Modupe Ehinlaiye: “As we celebrate the accomplishments of Nigerians in the diaspora, we recognize the remarkable achievements of individuals like Dr. Chika Stacy Oriuwa and Kingsley Madu. Their stories are a testament to the resilience, innovation, and excellence that define our community. Through the Bond Awards, we aim to honor these incredible journeys and inspire future generations to continue breaking barriers and achieving greatness.
