Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour has described the suspension of the 25% subsidy on public transportation in Lagos as insensitive and distressing. In a statement posted on his official handle, the former governorship candidate stated that “it is deeply distressing that the Lagos State Government has chosen to terminate transportation subsidies at a time when the cost of living is spiralling out of control.

With food inflation at a staggering 40% and the cost of transportation surging by over 30%, removing these subsidies will only worsen the plight of the already burdened citizens.”

Additionally Rhodes Vivour expressed concern saying that “This move reeks of elitism and completely disregards the struggles of low and middle-income earners. The government must ensure that its policies are inclusive and considerate of all its citizens’ well-being, especially those most vulnerable. Hence, pursuing policies that ignore the dire economic conditions faced by the people without providing adequate social safety nets is irresponsible and shows a lack of empathy for the citizens.”

He concluded his statement by urging the government to prioritize the people’s needs and implement measures to alleviate their suffering rather than burden them further. He further proffered alternative solutions that will address the genuine concerns of the majority, who are crumbling under the weight of harsh economic conditions. He concluded, “I have consistently advocated for slashing public transportation by 50%, reducing consumption tax and increasing stimulus spending.”
