Security, welfare of citizen’s primary function of government – LP

Labour Party

John Alechenu

The Labour Party (LP), has said the security and welfare of citizens remains the primary function of government as such, Chief Executives at all levels have a responsibility to discharge this function.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, said this in a chat with Vanguard, in Abuja, yesterday.

He was responding to a question on a declaration by the Zamfara State governor that the attitude of the police and the military with respect to banditry in his state was “frustrating.”

Ifoh said, “We in the Labour Party have always said, to get the best of our federation there are adjustments and sacrifices we all must make.

“Security is a collective responsibility and we believe the federating units must be empowered to discharge this responsibility.

“While the centre takes charge of protecting Nigeria against external aggression, the federating units should be empowered to take charge of internal security within their domains.

“It was in this same state that a sitting governor once announced that he has resigned his position as ‘Chief Security Officer’ but remained in office as governor.

“Those who seek political office must have the capacity and the will to discharge the responsibility of office.”
