PRESIDENT of the federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu has commended   the current leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, over the completion of projects started and abandoned by previous administrations of the commission.

Tinubu gave the commendation yesterday while commissioning the first phase and flaging-off the second phase of Iko-Atabrikang-Akata-Opolom-Okoroutip-Iwouchang Road, in Ibeno local government area of Akwa Ibom state.

The President who was represented by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio congratulated the NDDC governing Board for being the first since the creation of the commission in the year 2000 to remain united , focused, and commissioning projects that impacts the lives of people of the region directly.

He expressed delight that since the current governing board came on board it has been, undertaking projects that were started and abandoned by previous administrations

His words, “The Managing Director of the NDDC you are showing direction, you are showing focus. You have done well in commissioning of  projects across the region. This is the first time that the NDDC is impacting the lives of the people directly.

“You have roled out the things you are going to do for the youths, and the  women. You are undertaking even health programme and others. And under one year in office, you have been able to connect five local governments in Ondo state to the national grid. And today, you have brought us to Ibeno local government.

“The people of Ibeno now have another access road to civilisation. So with  the 6.87km, two lane single Carriage way with asphatic surface, 1 No 600m span RC bridge with side drains, the over 20 communities Seperated by the Qua Iboe River in Ibeno clan are now linked up by the 600m Bridge to Eastern Obolo and other places.

“This will facilitate trade, and other economic activities within the road alignment, exchange of ideas and education. Before you can only access this area through the Eket, Esit Eket road.

“You didn’t start this project but thank God it has been completed by you. If you didn’t complete it, it would have remained an abandoned project. Since you came you have been completing started and abandoned by previous administrations, so  why won’t we say Kudos to the current leadership of the NDDC”

The President called on the Commission to consider empowerment programmes for the youths and the women to enable them survive the hardship brought upon them as a result of oil exploration

“The Managing Director of NDDC, you should look at your 2024 budget to see what you have for this community. This community has given so much to Nigeria. The Qua Iboe Terminal (QIT) is just behind here, where ExxonMobil has exploited oil since 1950s.

“Up till today Nigeria is still benefitting from thousands of millions of barrels of crude oil from here, the terrain is very challenging and that’s why you can see only small buildings here. The people are suffering because of oil exploration.

“The ground is full of crude oil so they cannot plant anything, and that means the people need empowerment. So it is important that as you look at physical infrastructure also look  at stomach infrastructure.

“We have what we call Women in Agriculture development programme. They  don’t need loan , they need grant. Improved seedling. And I want to assure Akwa Ibom state governor Umo Eno that we are not deceivers, we must support you to succeed”, Tinubu asserted.

In his remarks, Governor Umo Eno  who was represented by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi appreciated management of the NDDC for the completion of the road project.

“The Niger Delta is a peculiar region with peculiar problems.   This Iko-Atabrikang-Akata-Opolom-Okoroutip-Iwouchang Road is a major road connecting various communities, and by this commissioning you have added value to their economic activities.

“This project is a major achievement of the commission and we commend you. I believe strongly that this will signal the beginning of the relationship between the NDDC and Akwa Ibom state government”, Gov Eno asserted.

The Managing Director of NDDC, Samuel Ogbuku said, “Since the assumption of duties by the current Executive management of the NDDC, it has been one of the driving forces to complete visible projects across the nine states of the region.

“It has not been any hinderance nor factor that most of these projects were inherited from past administrations of the commission.

“The most compelling need for this administration, instead, has been that these projects are completed to serve urgent needs in the communities in which they are situated, and help in renewing hope in the people in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“After so many years of yearning for a better Nigeria Delta region, the people deserve no less

Earlier in his goodwill message Paramount Ruler of Ibeno local government area HRM Owong

Effiong Archianga(JP) said words could not express their gratitude and appreciation to the Managing Director and board members of the NDDC for their magnanimity in completing the road project.

The Royal father stated, “There’s no gainsaying that Ibeno community has a recorded history as the first community in Akwa Ibom state where Oil and Gas exploration, production and development started as far back as 1961.

“It is also a known fact that the oil  well enriches oil producing states and Nigeria as a country but it has not alleviated the grounding poverty , neglect and depravation of the areas that produces it which Ibeno community is one.

“Even with this, Ibeno community shall continue to remain peaceful and support the government of the day.

The yearnings of our people over the years to have a good road that shall link the reverine communities to the people of Ibeno and their kiths and kins in the urban areas has been put to rest today.

“We owe the present Board and management of the NDDC a big thank you, as the economic importance of this road to Ibeno local government area and Akwa Ibom state can never be over-emphasized.
