Ravine reclamation: Umo Eno orders demolition of structures, residents’ relocation

By Chioma Onuegbu Uyo

GOVERNOR Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has ordered the demolition of structures and relocation of families affected by the ongoing Uyo-Ewet ravine reclamation exercise in the area.

Eno gave the relocation order   yesterday during an unscheduled visit to the reclamation project site.

He directed the Commissioner for Lands, Captain Iniobong Ekong to ensure the residents were immediately relocated to enable smooth implementation of the Uyo Recreational Park project plan.

He explained that by reclaiming the once inaccessible, abandoned and life-threatening ravine, government aims at creating wealth out of the waste.

He advised that all the forest trees within the area should be pruned to create the desired scenic atmosphere, and expressed delight that  work at the recreational park project has reached advanced stage.

” I assure you that when completed,  children and their parents, from within and outside the State,  will have a good facility for relaxation here” Gov Eno said.

Giving insight into the project, the Managing Director of Bulletin  Construction Company Limited, Chief Faysal Harb, said phase one of the recreational park, which has a golf course, football pitch, lawn tennis, basketball, volleyball courts and children playground, among others, is taking shape.

Newsmen gathered that some months ago during the governor’s first visit,  the Udo Inwang Street axis of the site was completely collapsed at the Etim Okon Usanga intersection and he had assured that the dangerous ravine would be converted to a recreational facility that “will be a tourists’ delight”.
