Meet Dwomoa Adu, first black UK consultant in kidney treatment

One of the most successful doctors in Ghana is Dwomoa Adu, the first black consultant nephrologist in the United Kingdom.

Dr Adu, a specialist in diagnosing and treating kidney lectures in the University of Ghana sharing knowledge in the field of Medical and Health Science/Dentistry.

Adu is an honorary consultant nephrologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, whose clinical research is focused on studying the activity of disease and damages in patients with lupus nephritis, vasculitis, and chronic kidney disease.

According to an interview with the UK Kidney Association, Adu said, “I loved working in Birmingham where I was appointed as a Consultant Physician and Nephrologist in 1981. The patients there really helped me, especially the ones from the black country.”

He said, “I have always loved looking after patients but have a special affection for the ones from the Black country who could be brutally honest but completely loyal.”

Speaking about his partnership with other professionals, the Ghanaian doctor said, “Together with my Consultant colleague and partner in Birmingham, Jonathan (now Sir Jonathan) Michael (JM) we have always been patient advocates before this became fashionable.”

After a career as Consultant Nephrologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, England, he returned to Ghana in 2009.

He took up an appointment as Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Ghana Medical School.

Adu has a long standing research interest in the immunogenetics and treatment of lupus nephritis and ANCA associated vasculitis.
