The 2015/16 Leicester City title win is one of the most incredible underdog stories in football history. Seven years later, the Foxes are back in the Championship chasing promotion, but what about the heroes who defied the odds? Here’s a look at where the starting eleven and their iconic manager, Claudio Ranieri, are today:
1. Kasper Schmeichel (GK): Ever reliable between the sticks, Schmeichel left Leicester for OGC Nice in 2023 but struggled to impress. He’s now found a new home at Belgian club Anderlecht, aiming to recapture his top form.
2. Danny Simpson (RB): A key figure in their title run, Simpson bounced around clubs after leaving Leicester in 2019. His journey took an unexpected turn as he now lines up for Macclesfield in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
3. Robert Huth (CB): A rock in Leicester’s defense, Huth called it a quits in 2019 and is now back at the King Power Stadium, not on the pitch, but as their loans manager.
4. Wes Morgan (CB): The inspirational captain who led by example, Morgan retired in 2021 after lifting the FA Cup. He’s now using his experience to give back to the game through the Premier League Black Participants’ Advisory Group and PEPS program.
5. Christian Fuchs (LB): A fan favorite and vocal presence in the dressing room, Fuchs left Leicester in 2021 for Charlotte FC in MLS. He recently transitioned from player to assistant coach, sharing his knowledge with the next generation.
6. N’Golo Kanté (CM): A tireless engine in the center of the park, Kanté (33) became a global superstar after his time at Leicester. He solidified his legacy with a Premier League title at Chelsea, followed by a World Cup win with France. In 2023, he made a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ittihad.
7. Danny Drinkwater (CM): Drinkwater had contrasting fortunes compared to his midfield partner. A big-money move to Chelsea in 2017 failed to materialize, and after several loan spells, including Reading in the Championship, he decided to call it quits on his playing career in 2023.
8. Marc Albrighton (RM): A fans’ favourite known for his exciting play, Albrighton is back at Leicester after a loan spell with West Brom in the Championship during their relegation season. He’s currently featuring for the Foxes in their bid to return to the Premier League.
9. Riyad Mahrez (LM): The PFA Player of the Year in 2016, Mahrez joined Manchester City in 2018 and added three more Premier League titles to his trophy cabinet. In 2023, he opted for a new challenge, joining Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.
10. Shinji Okazaki (ST): The often-underrated forward who played a crucial role in Leicester’s system, Okazaki is still going strong at 37. He currently features for Sint-Truiden in the Belgian league.
11. Jamie Vardy (ST): The last remaining member of the title-winning starting eleven at Leicester, Vardy’s electrifying pace and clinical finishing are still a threat to defenses. The 37-year-old striker is determined to help the Foxes reclaim their place in the Premier League.
Manager: Claudio Ranieri: The charismatic “Tinkerman” who masterminded Leicester’s title win, Ranieri (71) was surprisingly sacked just months after the victory. His managerial career since has seen him manage at Fulham, Watford, Roma, Sampdoria, and currently Cagliari in Serie A. He recently achieved a remarkable feat, leading Cagliari back to the top division in Italy last year.
Leicester City’s 2016 fairytale may have a new chapter in the Championship, but the legacy of these players and their remarkable achievement will forever be etched in football history.
