Super Eagles Coach: Gusau assures Nigerians will not wait in vain

The new week opened yesterday with expectations hitting the roof with many Nigerians anxiously waiting for the announcement of a new coach for the Super Eagles. Sports Development Minister, Senator John Enoh assured Nigerians that the senior men’s national team would have a new coach this week.

In another development, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau reiterated that a coach would be named this week and dismissed fears that the time would be too late for the coach to know the players well enough to be able to execute the looming World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic successfully. ‘’You will know the coach next week’’, Gusau said at the weekend.

‘’There is nothing to be afraid of. The coach knows all the players. Most of the players are professionals. There won’t be any problem with our World Cup qualifiers. We want the best for Nigerians and we’re making assurance doubly sure to come up with the best.

The waiting will not be in vain’’, Gusau assured. Speculations were rife on social media yesterday that Emmanuel Amuneke had been appointed the new coach but NFF refused to confirm or deny the story. Finidi George handled the team on an interim basis while the Nigeria Football Federation advertised for a replacement for Jose Peseiro, whose contract ended at the end of February.

Finidi led the Super Eagles to a 2- 1 victory over Ghana in his first game but suffered a 2-0 loss to Mali in the second match. The Super Eagles are set to play against South Africa and Benin Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June and will be looking to recover from disappointing draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
