Sports Ministry, NFF partner GTI to rename Federation Cup as President Federation Cup

The Ministry of Sports Development, through Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) achieved another landmark success weekend when they partnered with the GTI Asset Management and Trust Limited to rename the country’s oldest football competition, the Challenge Cup which had transformed severally over the years to now ‘ President Federation Cup.’

At the groundbreaking agreement signing ceremony which took place in Lagos, the Sports Minister, Senator John Owan-Enoh commended GTI for their huge support for the growth of Nigerian Football, noting that the partnership with GTI will no doubt breathe life into the most glamorous competition in the country. He added that the revitalized President Federation Cup will reignite more interest among fans and elevate the competition to a global standard.

Owan-Enoh said, ” Nigeria boasts a rich history, epitomized by prestigious competitions like the Challenge Cup, which has captivated the nation since 1945. Renamed variously over the years as the Nigeria FA Cup, Coca-Cola FA Cup, Nigeria Federation Cup, Aiteo Cup etc, it remains our most celebrated sporting event.

“Today, we gather to relaunch it as The President Federation Cup, honouring Nigeria’s highest office.

“By signing this agreement with GTI, we aim to reestablish the renamed competition on the national and international football calendar, involving grassroots teams, creating employment for approximately 500,000 Nigerians, engaging over 100,000,000 football enthusiasts, rejuvenating talents pipelines, fostering national pride and showcasing Nigeria’s greatness globally.

“The President Federation Cup will become President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s legacy, championing Nigerian football,”.

Earlier in his remarks, the GTI GMD Abubakar Lawal noted that as strategic partners to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) , saying, “we have taken another bold step to support the FA Cup. Our company is also strategically involved in ensuring that the President Federation Cup is given the necessary steps attention and support to thrive using The Nigeria Football Fund (TNFF) as our vehicle to actualize this dream. Therefore, it is our vision that the oldest domestic football event becomes one of the best organized football events in the world in no distant future “

Abubakar stressed further that, “GTI strongly believes that the President Federation Cup organization must be topnotch with the support of all the stakeholders.

He revealed that the positive feedback from the on-going NPFL 2023/2024 season is a testament to the immediate impact in Nigeria football development.

Equally, the President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau expressed deep appreciation of the GTI’s gesture.

Alhaji Gusau said the future of the President Federation Cup is bright with the new partnership between the Sports Ministry and GTI. 

He said, ” I’m the happiest man today because as the president of NFF and the man in charge of football in the country and seeing this kind of thing happening, I want to say that I’m the happiest person. The GTI came to us to see how they can help us achieve what we want to achieve.

“Today’s signing ceremony is just a continuation of what we started with GTI symbolically by making FA Cup more unique in the area of renaming the tournament by calling it the President Federation Cup. I think this is a privilege for every single corporate organization to see that they partner themselves with the product, because when you talk about the President Federation Cup, you’re talking about the visibility or the mileage you need as far as corporate organization is concerned.”

He recalled that the round of 64 draws was made last Thursday saying that very soon, the they would come with the breakdown of what the tournament is going to be all about in the areas prize money, what the clubs will benefit and the rest.
