In a tragic turn of events, John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024. The renowned Nigerian actor and comedian, born on October 17, 1961, succumbed to an illness that had plagued him in recent months.
Okafor’s health struggles were first brought to light in November 2023 when his family confirmed the amputation of one of his legs due to a severe infection in the arteries at the ankle. Sadly, the infection went undetected in its early stages, leading to the drastic measure to save his life.

The actor gained fame in 2004 with the release of the movie “Mr Ibu,” co-starring with the popular Osita Iheme. Throughout his career, Mr Ibu became a household name in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
In an old interview with Vanguard, Okafor shared his near-death experience, mentioning that he had glimpses of the afterlife before being brought back to the living by divine intervention. He attributed his illness to the actions of those who harbored animosity towards him.
The passing of Mr Ibu marks a significant loss to the Nigerian entertainment industry. His enduring legacy will be remembered through his impactful contributions to Nollywood.
