BENIN CITY – A political group, Edo Women In Politics (EWIP) has appealed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo to pick a female as his running mate for the September 21 governorship election.

The group also wanted the candidate of the party and the leaders not to look far as they urged them to pick the daughter of the Esama of Benin, Hon Omosede Igbinedion as his running mate.
It would be recalled that Hon Igbinedion was a governorship aspirant before last Friday’s governorship primary election but stepped on the day of the primary and directed her supporters to cast their votes for Ighodalo.

In a statement signed by the group’s coordinator, Mrs. Evelyn Ine, they urged the national leaders of the party to rally round them in their quest for a female Deputy Governor in the state.

The statement added that Ighodalo needed a running mate that could muster votes for him and that Igbinedion is the only politician in the party from the southern senatorial district with such capacity.

They said she displayed this in the last presidential and National Assembly elections as they said she gathered the highest number of votes for the party in the whole of Edo South Senatorial District

The statement said “Our party’s national leaders must ensure that we have a genuine reconciliation among the governorship aspirants. Omosede Gabriella Igbinedion must be pacified and compensated with the deputy governorship slot.

“We can’t afford to lose votes to the APC in the southern senatorial district. The aim of the people in the south is to produce the next Governor but with the emergence of Ighodalo, PDP candidate needs a running mate that is well-grounded in the southern senatorial district”
