The late Oba Babatunde Ogunsakin
The widow of the king of Esun Ekiti in Ajoni, Yetunde Ogunsakin, has revealed her last conversation with her husband, Oba Babatunde Ogunsakin, before he was murdered by gunmen.
Ogunsakin made the revelation in an interview with AIT on Wednesday.
Recall that Oba Ogunsakin of Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State and Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti, Oba Olatunde Samuel Olusola, from Oye local government area of the state, were shot dead by the assailants on Monday.
The traditional rulers were said to be returning from a security meeting in Irele-Ekiti in a vehicle being driven by one of their counterparts, the Alara of Ikole-Ekiti, Adebayo Fatoba, when gunmen struck them.
However, the Alara of Ara-Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba Ikole, escaped.
Speaking on how her husband met her demise, Ogunsakin’s widow said the monarch said he was hungry and that she should prepare a meal for him before he arrived at his palace.
The widow said she became so worried after hours that she called the traditional ruler and did not answer.
She said, “He called me when he reached Ajowa that he was coming, that he was hungry and I should prepare something for him. Ajowa to this place, I was not checking time, that it is not supposed to take more than one hour. Getting to one hour, one hour plus, I was calling his phone. He did not pick.”
Also speaking on the development, a community leader from Esun Ekiti, Chief Niyi Ojo, said, “I was shocked when I was called around 4:30 to be informed that he has been attacked by assailants and that he was killed in the process with a fellow Kabieyesi, Onimojo of Imojo.”
The country has been faced with a spate of kidnappings and killings in recent times.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu vowed on Tuesday that the killers of the Ekiti monarchs would not escape justice.
President Tinubu condemned the killing of two Ekiti traditional rulers.
“President Tinubu condemns this mindless and brutal bloodletting, and pledges that the perpetrators will not escape justice,” read a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, titled, ‘President Tinubu condemns the killing of traditional rulers in Ekiti and directs the immediate rescue of kidnapped pupils.
Tinubu, who mourned the two traditional rulers, condoled with their families and subjects, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, and the people of Ekiti State on what he called a “deeply agonising development.”
Similarly, the President ordered the immediate rescue of pupils and teachers kidnapped around the Eporo-Ekiti area of the state.
At least six pupils, three teachers, and a bus driver were kidnapped in Ekiti by unknown gunmen when they were returning from Eporo-Ekiti on Monday night.
