2023 AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles fall at home, lose 1-0 to Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau

The Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau have shocked the Super Eagles, claiming a 1-0 win over the three-time African champions at the MKO Stadium, Abuja on Friday.

This will be the first time Guinea-Bissau will defeat the Eagles.

The win shoots them to the top of the table, edging the Super Eagles with one point.

The hosts had the first chance in the game when in-form Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen saw his header go wide the post.

The visitors kept their cool, biding their time for counterattacks; and could have opened the scoring in the 21st minute when a long range strike from their attacker went just off target.

They, however, got lucky in the 29th minute when Mama Balde outpaced the unsuspecting Eagles defence to slot past Francis Uzoho.

Few minutes later, Guinea-Bissau almost increased their lead but the ball hit the side netting.

The Eagles, rejuvenated, came out more intentional in the second half and almost drew level in the 56th minute but Moses Simon could not bridge Chukwueze’s low cross to goal.

In the 61st minute, the ever-boisterous Osimhen managed to hit a shot which the Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper parried to safety.

With the Super Eagles pressing more as time ticked away, Osimhen saw his shot missing the target off a cross from Moses Simon.

Further chances to draw level for the Super Eagles were met with stiff resistance from the resolute Guinea-Bissau team who held on to their lone goal lead to walk away unscathed.

The reverse fixture is slated for Monday March 27th in Bissau.
