The State of Lagos Vs Victor and Lawrence

Lagos: Court Issues Warrant of Arrest Against a Lawyer, Chinedu Victor, his Colleague, Umeadi Lawrence

His Lordship, Honourable Justice I.O Ijelu of the High Court of Lagos State, Ikeja Judicial Division on Friday the 28th day of October, 2022 issued a Bench Warrant for the arrest of Barrister Victor Chinedu and one Lawrence Umeadi for their failure to appear before the Court when their matter was called up in the court on the same date.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Peter Owolabani prayed the court for the issuance of the Bench Warrant against Victor Chinedu and Lawrence Umeadi Chika and the court acceded to his request. Matter was therefore adjourned to the 9th of November, 2022.

On this return date, the two defendants did not still show up in court which prompted the Court to further adjourn to 7th December, 2022.

Recall, on September 21, 2022, Victor Chinedu and Lawrence Umeadi Chika were arraigned before Magistrate Court 17, Igbosere sitting at Tinubu Lagos, for stealing and diversion of company property and threat to life. They were both granted bail.

After the arraignment, the Lagos State Ministry of Justice requested for the case file, for legal advice.

On July 1st, 2022, the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions issued a Legal advice against the defendants, Barrister Victor Chinedu and Lawrence Umeadi Chika; that both have case to answer and that the Ministry of Justice would be prosecuting the matter at the High Court which came up before the Honourable Justice I.O Ijelu of Ikeja High Court. The two (2) defendants were absent which led to the Issuance of the Bench Warrant.

In the preceding scenario, the nominal complainant in this matter, one Anthony Okpala stated he had approached the office of the DPP to clarify him why it seems to be an uphill task getting the defendants arrested with their sureties known and available.
