There is palpable tension in Ilorin, Kwara state capital as the gubernatorial candidates of both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will emerge between now and tomorrow, Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state, Prince Sunday Fagbemi has dropped the hint that Governor AbdulRazaq will emerge as the sole candidate for the party.
Also at press time, delegates are still being called into the Arca Centre event centre along Ajase Ipo Road, Ilorin to elect the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)gubernatorial candidate.
Vanguard reliably gathered that the nineteen aspirants who initially signified interests have been screened to three to contest the ongoing primaries.
They are, Aliyu Ahman Patigi Prof. Yisa Gana and Alh Muhammed Yamah
While the candidate has been zoned to Kwara North by the leadership of the party, the total number of Delegates to vote at the ongoing exercise of Kwara PDP Governorship primary is 596.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the APC in the state, Prince Sunday Fagbemi speaking at a press conference today said that no fewer than 1,930 delegates elected from the 193 wards in the state will participate in the governorship and House of Assembly primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to be held in the state on Thursday.
Prince Fagbemi also said that while 965 delegates were elected as state delegates during the congress of the party, another 965 delegates elected from various wards as local government delegates will elect the 24 members of the state House of Assembly in their various constituencies.
He added that while the state governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq is the sole candidate in the governorship primary election, about 105 aspirants will be voted for in the House of Assembly primary election in the state.
According to Fagbemi, “Few of the incumbents, including the State Governor were returned unopposed. However, this does not exempt them from electoral process which required them to be affirmed.”
He said that while the governorship primary would hold at the Banquet Hall opposite Kwara state government house, election for State House of Assembly members would hold at specific centers in various 24 constituencies across the state adding that “all delegates are advised to set the specified centers for accreditation as early as 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.
“For peaceful conduct of the exercise, all party members participating in the exercise must comply with all laid down procedures warning non – Delegates to keep off venues of the election.
“Delegates must conduct themselves in a decent and orderly manner devoid of any rancor or indecent rowdiness.
“The party will not tolerate any form of indiscipline from candidates of their followers. Therefore the use of thugs or “good boys” is prohibited and warned that aspirants shall be held responsible for any breach of peace and misconduct at the venue of the exercise.”
The party chairman who promised fairness in the conduct of the election however advised any aggrieved member to exhaust all windows of all opportunities available to them to make redress if they experienced any shortfall in the conduct of the election.
