The general economic situation and the prevailing social realities triggered by insurgency’s impact have significantly disrupted the normal livelihood processes in several states in Northeastern Nigeria.

As the Nigerian military has continued to be successful in overpowering the Boko Haram terrorist group, there emerged an urgent need for sustainable business innovation to connect displaced people with opportunities and tools necessary to support their families and communities as they are reintegrated.

While international agencies, organizations, and government support have provided some relief, the results have yet to be sustainable enough to offer long-lasting solutions to uplift the people.

Afolabi Salami has been at the forefront of addressing these challenges. He spearheaded the implementation of a program supported by Mercy Corps Nigeria with funds provided by USAID to promote rural resilience. Using a group-based model, Afolabi has effectively empowered micro and small-scale entrepreneurs by creating a bridge that brings all disadvantaged entrepreneurs together and provides the necessary building blocks to boost their growth. This model facilitates easy access to financial services, business support services, and training.

Afolabi introduced entrepreneurs to digital and financial services, exposing them to different ideas for achieving scalability within their groups of micro and small business networks and fully harnessing their benefits. Afolabi has helped them expand their market reach, improve financial management, and enhance operational efficiency by teaching them how to leverage digital platforms and financial tools.

Over the years, Afolabi has demonstrated his ability to deliver services using technology and business support, making a real difference in the lives of individual entrepreneurs. He started his career as a management consultant and has since supported several small businesses by providing strategies to help them grow and increase profitability. His approach involves thoroughly assessing each business’s unique challenges and opportunities and then developing tailored strategies to address their needs.

His expertise covers business planning, market analysis, financial management, and digital transformation. Afolabi has assisted businesses with comprehensive business plans that outline clear paths to growth, identify new market opportunities, and optimize financial operations to ensure sustainability and profitability. His knowledge of digital tools has also helped many small businesses transition to online platforms, increasing their visibility and customer base and transforming their operations.

Afolabi accomplishments for the small business communities, especially in underserved regions, have significantly improved the general livelihood of these communities through entrepreneurship. By fostering an environment where micro and small businesses can thrive, Afolabi is not just providing immediate relief but is also building a foundation for long-term economic stability and growth in North-East Nigeria. His efforts have not only uplifted individual businesses but have also contributed to the overall economic resilience of the region.
