Kwara Speaker calls for suspension of 16 Local council chairmen

The 34 years old Kwara State House of Assembly speaker,  Rt. Hon. Yakubu Saliu Danladi had called for suspension of 16 local council chairmen in the state over an allegation on misappropriation of N33 billion local government funds.

This was part of the house resolutions while announcing the composition of the House’s various standing committees at the  Assembly’s plenary penultimate on Tuesday in Ilorin, the state capital.

According to the Speaker, the local government funds issue was raised following a petition by a concerned citizen on the alleged misappropriation of N33billion by the council chairmen over the past 2 years.

He urged Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq to implement the house resolution to allow for proper investigations into their alleged mismanagement of council funds in the last two years.

The Speaker however emphasized the need for commitment and devotion in carrying out the oversight functions of the various committees.

It could be recalled that the 34 years old Yakubu, whose emergence as speaker of the state Assembly came as a surprise to many, due to the conservative political structure in Kwara state for many years.

Yakubu who has become one of the recipients of the ‘not too young to run’ crusade is keeping many political pundits awake with keen interests on changes to be witnessed with youths at the helm of affairs.

A lecturer of Political Science at the University of Ilorin, Abdulwaheed R. Isiaq reacted to the young speaker’s action saying, “After decades of state capture from the Saraki dynasty which was ousted by the ‘O To Ge’ movement, there is this euphoria in the air, as to what this change in political direction could berth. This could be likened to what was experienced during the times of the Herbert Macaulays and Anthony Enahoros in the parliament. It is resurgence, I must say.”

He said, “The emergence of Danladi Yakubu as the speaker of the state House of Assembly is a welcome development. This is what we have been advocating for decades. You can’t sideline a demography (youths) that makes up a great percentage of your population and its most active segment for that matter, and expect to grow geometrically.”

“And we can see the speed at which he (Danladi) has moved to work. Seeking to clean the Augean stable of rot pilled over the decades by starting with the local governments. That is where real development is nurtured, from the SMEs to the cooperatives, they are the life blood of any economy. As former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Tip O’Neill once put it, all politics is local.”
