ENUGU – OVER 120 scholars drawn across the world Thursday gathered at University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, to brainstorm on the lingering resource control induced conflicts in Nigeria with a view to finding a lasting solution.
Experts from Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands and other countries joined other Humboldt scholars in Nigeria to contribute on how to resolve issues surrounding resource control.
Declaring open the 4-day conference tagged “Nigeria’s Resource War Conference” organized by Humboldt Kolleg, the Vice Chancellor, UNN, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, disclosed that the country is currently suffering from insecurity which was as a result of the poor management of resource control conflicts.
Prof. Ozumba, lamented that: “resources which should have been deployed into infrastructure, well-funded education, healthcare delivery, employment for the teeming youths have been sunk into rebuilding the devastated society occasioned by the incessant wars over resources.
Ozumba who commended the organisers for aligning with the founding fathers of UNN, urged the participants to brainstorm and come up with a policy to tackle the resource conflicts in Nigeria.
Addressing the participants, the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Bernhard Stephan Schlagheck, commended Prof. Egodi Uchendu for gathering scholars across the world to deliberate on a crucial issues and find a way forward for the country.
He promised that German government would maintain the cordial relationship the exist between them and Nigeria, adding that they would assist Nigeria where they found it necessary to ensure success.
In her speech, the convener of the first Humboldt Kolleg in Nigeria, Prof, Dr, Egodi Uchendu said that the Humboldt kolleg is a specialist gathering of scholars to brainstorm on a problem facing the nation.
Prof. Egodi, disclosed that the issue of resource control in Nigeria which has led to killings of million Nigerians and loss of property made her to organized the conference in Nigeria.
“What touched me so much was that I know the problem we are suffering from as a result of conflicts resulting from resource control. These resource are not just mineral resources. We have non mineral resources.
“How do we deal with them, how do we deal with these issues that have threatened to roots of the nation. Our managers are not taking the actions they are supposed to take so I was very burdened by what is going on”, she said.
