The 2019 World Autism Awareness Day, WAAD, is put together to address the hurdles that people with autism and others living with autism face every day.
With this year’s celebration, it is observed that the growing global health issue owing to its increasing exposure in the media and common knowledge, autism is an issue that is only gaining more understanding and WAAD activities are planned every year to further increase and develop world knowledge of children and adults who have Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD.
The Day is celebrated on every April 2, with catergories of activities from education awareness, family awareness, health awareness as well as international awareness.
Unfortunately, not too much have been done on this aspect of human life even as stakeholders from different fields are still finding it difficult to relate with the issue. From funding to sponsorship, the issue of austism has been described as failed projects.
However, World Autism Awareness Day goes one step further to celebrate the unique talents of those with autism, while putting a huge focus on the warm embrace and welcome that these skills deserve through community events around the globe.
It is an internationally recognized day thereby encouraging Member States of the United Nations to take measures to raise awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) throughout the world.
It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution “62/139. World Autism Awareness Day”, passed in council on 1 November 2007, and adopted on 18 December 2007. It was proposed by the United Nations representative from Qatar, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, Consort of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, and supported by all member states.
This resolution was passed and adopted without a vote in the UN General Assembly, mainly as a supplement to previous UN initiatives to improve human rights.
World Autism Day is one of only seven official health-specific UN Days. The day itself brings individual autism organizations together all around the world to aid in things like research, diagnoses, treatment, and acceptance for those affected by this developmental disorder.

There is no known single cause for autism spectrum disorder, but it is generally accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. Brain scans show differences in the shape and structure of the brain in children with autism compared to in neurotypical children.
