Former Super Eagles assistant coach and Nigeria Football Federation technical director, James Peters has revealed how former Dutch coach, Clemens Westerhof dropped Emmanuel Amuneke from the class of the 1994 Super Eagles.
Amuneke turned out to be hero of the Super Eagles during the the final game of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Tunisia. His brace against Zambia in the final fetched Nigeria her second AFCON title.
But Peters who was speaking to brila.net said Westerhof dropped Amuneke because of his physical condition.
“Westerhof didn’t want Amuneke because of the shape of his legs. But I stood my ground pointing to Amuneke’s exploits with Zamalek of Egypt. I told Westeroff we cannot afford to lose such prospect,” Peters said.
However, Westerhof relented and Amuneke went ahead to justify his inclusion. Amuneke recently qualified Tanzania and he is looking forward to playing at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where he came to limelight.
