UNILAG honours Jim Ovia, Olukoya, others

LAGOS—THE University of Lagos, UNILAG, Thursday, conferred  Honorary Doctorate Degrees on Chairman of Zenith Bank, Mr. Jim Ovia; General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles, Dr. Daniel Olukoya and  Alhaji  Olufemi Okunnu during its 50th Convocation ceremony held at the institution’s main auditorium, Lagos.

Speaking during the conferment, the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe said the gesture was done in recognition of the awardees’ various contribution to humanity.

In his acceptance remark, Jim Ovia, who lauded the gesture, urged the Federal Government to approve more private universities to meet the shortfall of admission in tertiary institutions.

He said: “The Federal Government should grant approval to more  private universities to meet the shortfall of admission in our universities.”

Also, Dr Olukoya called for financial motivation for our undergraduates, stressing that since he publicly promised a car for any first class student in his church, the numbers of first class graduates shot up.

On his part, Alhaji Okunnu decried the state of education in the north saying “The State and the Federal Government must do more about secondary education.”

Babalakin tasks stakeholders on quality education

Earlier,  the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, UNILAG Governing Council, Dr. Wale Babalakin, SAN, urged Nigerians to go for quality education as it is obtainable in developed countries.

Babalakin said: “There is nothing like quality education in Nigeria, our aim in terms of quality education should be how Nigerian education  can compete favourably with Ivy League institutions globally.”

In the breakdown of the post graduates students,  the  VC said 150 had Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees,  as 4,771 got Masters Degrees and 484 Postgraduate Diplomas.
