Makurdi—Bothered by incessant cases of suspected criminal elements extorting money from unsuspecting tax payers in Benue State, Executive Chairman of Benue Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, Mr. Terzungwe Atser, has appealed to security agencies in the state to arrest and prosecute anyone fingered in tax fraud.
Atser who lamented that his office had been inundated with reports from tax payers of impostors parading as either staff of BIRS or tax agents with different illegal receipts to extort money on behalf of the agency urged tax payers to report such cases to security agencies.
Speaking when he hosted the leadership of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, Benue State Chapter in his office in Makurdi, Atser promised that BIRS management would soon reactivate the Joint Committee of Taxes as provided in the gazetted laws of BIRS 2015 to ensure that payment for all taxable heads in the state were harmonized in one lump for ease of payment and to curb fraud.
In a statement by his Special Assistant on Madia, Dennis Mernyi, the Executive Chairman said the policy would further make the process less cumbersome for tax payers, assuring that he would work hard to restore the battered relationship between staff and agents of BIRS and tax payers in the state.
