…He needs foreign treatment—-Nwobodo
By Dennis Agbo
ENUGU- HOSPITALIZED, former Nigeria skipper and coach, Christian Chukwu has said that he was being well taken care of by both the Enugu state government, friends, admirers, family and well wishers.
Chukwu who spoke in a hospital bed in Enugu, Saturday evening, also said that USA based philanthropist and Patron of ex-Rangers football Association, Chief Benson Ejindu meant well in his concern for his ill-health, noting that Ejindu has not only been helpful to him alone but to all ex-Ranger players.
Chukwu also said that he read about the offer of Businessman, Femi Otedola, to take care of his treatment but was yet to be contacted.
This was as former chairman of Rangers FC and former Governor of old Anambra state, Senator Jim Nwobodo said that coach Chukwu deserves treatment abroad despite the good treatment he is receiving in Nigeria.
Nwobodo who spoke with newsmen shortly after visiting Chukwu on hospital bed said that the state government was doing its best on Chukwu’s ill-health, just like other concerned Nigerians that have expressed concerns.
Nwobodo said: “I also personally saw the doctor who confirmed that he has improved a lot and I am happy. I am very satisfied with the doctor, he is knowledgeable, young and knows what he is doing and he said that anytime the government is ready to take him abroad, he is ready to let him go and I personally believe he need to go abroad for treatment.
Clearing the air on the controversy generated over Chukwu’s ill-health, Nwobodo said that the Enugu state government had not abandoned coach chukwu. “In fact as he is here now, the state government is bearing the cost of his treatment here and it has made sure that he is properly looked after. I think that the state government is doing very well. Chukwu cannot be abandoned really because there are many people who are ready to take over his treatment but I think the state government can do that and it is doing that very well.”
On what coach Chukwu told him about Benson Ejindu and Femi Otedola, Nwobodo said “Chukwu said Benson Ejindu is his good friend and not just a good friend of his but a good friend of Rangers International. It’s a pity I don’t know him but I would like to get in touch with him. He said Ejindu is his good friend and that that he is the one that brought him to this hospital. He did all that before the government took over. So Benson Ejindu whatever he said must have been for lack of proper communication. The state government is taking care of him and Ejindu has done his own best and he is prepared to do more.
“He said he just read about Femi Otedola but has not been contacted, unless Otedola has made contact with the government, but I don’t think Otedola will speak without really being serious about it. So they need to get in touch with him or rather he should get in touch with the family, but having said it in the newspapers I think he is serious and I think it is a very good thing for a Nigerian to appreciate the glory Chukwu brought to Nigeria.
“Chukwu was captain of the national team and he was equally captain of Rangers FC and its good people are appreciating him. I am sure he will not suffer because the government is there, and knowing Governor Ugwuanyi since he came to power, Rangers has risen again” 32 years after lifting the first cup it was possible for the club to lift the cup again under him.
