The Commandant, Nigeria Navy Secondary School Abeokuta, A O Onyimba has emphasized on the importance of sports in the development of students.
Onyimba, made the emphasis at the 24th edition of Nigeria Navy Secondary School (NNSS) annual inter house sports held in Abeokuta at the weekend.
According to her, “sports generally plays vital role in the overall development of our children. It is in competitions like this that potential talents are discovered.”
“It is also an acceptable fact that a physically fit student functions and can withstand the rigors of academic training better than an unfit student.”
“Hence the need for an annual inter-house sports competition and other robust sporting activities in school to compliment the children’s academic.”
Proudly assuring parents of the children’s talent, the Commandant noted that “our children are talented as you will soon when the competition begins. It is believed that in the nearest future some of them will realize their dreams of becoming world class athletes or footballer like: Innocent Emenike and Mikel Obi.
Commandant Onyimba further endeared of competitors and contestants to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and brotherly love in the course of the competition as they exhibit their talents”.
In the keenly contested competition between the four houses: Aikhomo (Blue) house, Nyako (green house), Koshoni (purple) house and, Omatshola (red), Nyako (green house) emerged the overall winner clinching the trophy with a total of 173 points.
Nyako, beat Aikhomo (Blue) house and Omatshola (red) house who emerged first and second runner up with 161 and 141 points respectively.
The colourful activity filled event had different sporting performance like: match past, hundred 100 meter (junior and senior) sack race, High jump (junior and senior) four times four relay (senior) and a novelty soccer match.
The highlight of the competition was the presentation of prizes to the overall house winner and first runner up. Other prizes were grabbed by outstanding contestants who performed exceptionally.
Ajao Emmanuel of Koshoni house won the outstanding athlete in the competition while Kayode Daniel of Nyako house won the prize for sack race.
Invited schools were not left out of the competition as they participated in 100 meters relay race.
Some of the invited schools were: Command Day secondary school, African Church grammar school, Nigeria Navy Secondary School Ojo, Rev Kuti Grammar school and others.
The event which was graced by teachers, parents and guardians of the navy boys had important personalities who added colour to the event.
