Ahead of forthcoming governorship election in Lagos, the All progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Friday, wooed the Public servants, distributing at least 30, 000 bags of branded rice to the workers.
Sanwo-Olu’s aide handed over the rice to the workers after a meeting held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa secretariat, Ikeja, which was attended by hundreds of civil servants in the state.
Many of the staffs were sighted scrambling for the rice which was branded with the picture of the candidates. It was gathered that one person sustained injury during the process.
A chieftain of the party disclosed that the rice was party of the strategy designed by the APC candidate and the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.
Vanguard gathered that the approval to use the Secretariat Auditorium was Ambode’s response to allegations that he was sponsoring Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s candidate, Jimi Agbaje, to win the march 9thpoll.
It was further learned that Ambode, in a bid to debunk the allegation of sponsoring Agbaje directed the Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, to approved use of the Alausa Secretariat Auditorium for Sanwo-Olu to meet the workers and explain his vision to the workers.
Earlier before the meeting at the Auditorium, Vanguard gathered that the Permanent Secretaries of the ministries were also instructed to deploy sizeable number of their staffs to attend the meeting with Sanwo-Olu.
Confirming the facts, a top civil servant disclosed to our correspondent that before the meeting, several Short Messages, SMS were sent to each staff from the Permanent Secretary compelling us to attend the meeting.
“You witness the event today yourself and you see that several civil servants went home with bags of rice. And that is to tell you that the governor is wooing us ahead of the election.”
At the meeting, a Permanent Secretary disclosed that the meeting was earlier scheduled for 11am but Sanwo-Olu appealed that such time would halt activities at the secretariat, saying, he demanded that the meeting should hold 9am.
Aside Sanwo-Olu, his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who was also present at the meeting assured the workers that they have a clear plan to improve their welfare.
Meanwhile on his alleged support Agbaje, his Chief Press Secretary, Abeeb Aruna, debunked the claim that the governor was sponsoring any candidate aside APC candidate, saying there is no iota of truth in that.
Also, a party chieftain, who spoke on anonymity, disclosed to Vanguard that the governor single handedly gave each candidate in the state funds to persuade voters to cast their ballot for APC.
“And you can see what happened during the election. Unlike Ondo and Oyo state where the party lost, in Lagos, the party won and that is a plus to the party. This was party of the contribution of the governor.
“Also, Ambode ensured that the party win especially in Epe Local Government where the party defeated PDP by 4,000 votes. So we cannot claim that the man is not supporting the APC candidate in the state.”
