Ex Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Angwe, shot in Benue

By Peter Duru, Makurdi
Former Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Prof. Bem Angwe, was, yesterday, morning attacked and shot by unknown gunmen in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.

Sunday Vanguard gathered that the professor of law, who is in a critical but stable condition, was accosted by the armed men in a Toyota Corolla car, also known as ‘dog yash’, at a filling station in the Gyado Junction area of the town.

An eyewitness said: “He drove into the filling station (name withheld) in a black SUV to buy fuel when the young men who must have been trailing him also drove into the station.

“They approached him and wanted to force him into their own vehicle and probably take him away but I think he sensed that they wanted to kidnap him; so he engaged them in a fight.

“It was while that was going on that one of the young men pulled out a gun and shot him after which they fled taking away with them the SUV.

“Though the gunshot attracted the attention of people within the area who mobilized to the scene, the assailants had already escaped when the people stormed the scene.”

Angwe was said to have been immediately rushed to a private hospital in Gboko from where he was transferred to a public hospital in Makurdi for proper medical attention.
