Nsukka—An Enugu Chief Magistrate has threatened to try the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, for Uzo Uwani Local Government Area, Mr Simon Akor for contempt of court over alleged failure to arrest and bring a rapist to his court for trial as ordered.
Chief Magistrate Malachy Ifeanyi Mamah, made the threat at Uzo Uwani weekend, following the failure of the police to arrest and bring one Christopher Ezeugwu and his sureties for trial in court since July last year.
Ezeugwu, 18, from Ugwuenechi village, Umuobira in Nkpologu, Uzo Uwani was accused of raping an 11 year old girl (name withheld) in the area at about 2pm on July 11, 2018 and in the process, caused damage to her urinary tract.
It was said that the police in the area failed to arrest the accused person after he had jumped bail, following which a bench warrant for both his arrest and those of sureties was issued.
The mother of the victim, Mrs Amah, had told the court that her daughter’s bladder had been leaking since the rape incident which had caused the victim and members of her family a lot of agony.
Before adjourning the case again to Friday April 5, 2019, last Friday, March 22, 2019, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr Mamah, noted that the police had failed to carry out his order on the arrest of the accused rapist and threatened to commence contempt proceedings against the DPO for Adani, Mr Akor for not carrying out the order of his court.
