The Executive Director of CCD, Mr David Anyaele, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Saturday.

President Muhammadu Buhari, had on Jan. 25, signed the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Bill into an Act (Law).

Anyaele noted that gazetting the law would further make it official and known by all government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) so that its provisions would be implemented and carried out to the latter.

“Since making a law to work is a procedural thing; after the gazette, we have to make it popular among the generality of the people.

“As well, wait and have patience for the five years given for all MDAs, and even private concerns, to comply with all the provisions therein contained in the law.

“However, CCD has started massive sensitisation of People Living With Disabilities (PWDs) on the content of the law.

“We, as a centre, have a lot of work to do in terms of sensitising PWDs so that they know their rights and the responsibilities of the law as applicable to them as citizens.

“The centre is also looking for organisations and donors that will come to its aid for the current massive sensitisation on the law to get to all the nook and cranny of the country where PWDs are resident or where they can be found,’’ he said.

Anyaele also urged Buhari to set-up the National Disability Commission.

“Most importantly, the National Disability Commission will address complaints of harassment, discrimination and harmful practices among other crimes against PWDs in the society,’’ he noted. (NAN)
