Pastor Adewale who is an international speaker on marriage, parenting and family life made the submission during the public presentation of his new book titled:  Protecting Your Children from Sexual Abuse in Ikeja, Lagos.

The event which started with the presentation of video clips of child abuse cases was attended by literary writers and some of the people that have read the book afforded the audience the opportunity to contribute to the all important topic. Some of the speakers who commended the author for coming out with such life- changing book, said the coming of the book is timely as it will help parents know how to save their wards from predators.

According to Adewale, “the menace of child sexual abuse in our society has become so alarming that we can only imagine what is happening under the roof and we can’t just get it accurately. Statistics about child sexual abuse keeps increasing every day, hence the coming of the book.”

In her opening remarks, wife of the author and a marriage counsellor too, Mrs Yomi Adewale said the writing of the book was borne out of an urgent need to mitigate this great problem in the society today. “There is urgent need to educate parents and the society so that their children will not be victims of sexual abuse and to counsel those that were abused and bring comfort to them. The book tells them how to teach them about sex education, how to identify predators and how to run away from them.

On his part, the author, Bisi Adewale, a prolific writer who has written 92 bestselling books on family life, stated that he got provoked to finally write this book after someone sent a video of little school children performing oral sex for each other in their school compound. “Parents need to know about sexual abuse. They need to know how to prevent it and how to coach their children. Also, they need to know what to do if abuse happens. Somebody needs to tell them and I think I am in a vantage position to do this having put about 20 years into training families, equipping parents, helping people to raise good homes and godly children. So, I am putting all these experiences into this book to help you raise a child without blemish.”

Speaking about the book, the Family Life-Line host  on radio and television stated that “Protecting Your Children From Sexual Abuse has been written to help in dealing with the menace of child sexual abuse in our society.” According to him, “a study revealed that 1 in every 10 children would be sexually abused before age 18, so the book seeks to open the eyes of parents to the need to protect the lives of their children from paedophiles in our society.”

The book opens with 51 heartbreaking and real-life stories of past sexual abuse victims. Many of these victims, now adults, shared stories of what happened to them when they were younger. Some were as young as four years old.

The book also reveals what sexual abuse is and how a child can be abused. It gives the differences between sex education and sexualisation, recent statistics on child sexual abuses and shows reasons why parents should be careful about people they trust with their children’s upkeep. A study revealed that about 80 per cent of sexually abused children have been abused by people known closely to them (uncles, cousins, aunties, teachers, spiritual leaders, neighbours, nannies, baby sitters etc.),” he noted.

Indicators or signs that a child is being sexually abused are revealed in the book while factors that predispose a child to sexual abuse are also mentioned.

In the book, readers will be exposed to mistakes parents make that expose their children to sexual abuse; what to do when a child is sexually abused; how to prevent abuse and how to protect children from abusers. How to give an age-grade sexual education by giving a practical guide on how to educate toddlers, pre-scholars, grade-scholars, pre-teens and teenagers formed the latter chapters.

How to identify predators and paedophiles, know when their children are being sexually abused and what to do are also discussed. The book is available at several books outlets.
