We have listened enough to Obasanjo in this country

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, by far the greatest contributor to the underdevelopment of Nigeria, is at it again.

Olusegun Obasanjo

This most failed leader in the entire history of this country is once more desperately hugging the limelight, imperiously commanding Nigerians not to vote for incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Amongst a myriad of totally unsubstantiated and highly inciting allegations, Obasanjo alleges that President Buhari and the leadership of the APC are warming up to rig the forthcoming elections with utmost impunity.

According to Obasanjo, it is in a bid to prevent this and ensure Nigeria gets the sort of leadership it deserves in the next dispensation, that he has endorsed his erstwhile estranged former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and the opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP for the 2019 polls.

We recall that Obasanjo has been at this game of criticising any government in power right from his exit as military dictator way back in 1979.

The regimes of President Shehu Shagari, (the then) General Muhammadu Buhari, General Ibrahim Babangida, and General Sanni Abacha all came in for unsparing criticism throughout their stints in power.

Ever since he failed to achieve his inordinate third term ambition and had to bow out in 2007, the President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, President Goodluck Jonathan and the incumbent President Buhari administrations have not been spared Obasanjo’s relentless bile and unrelenting venom.

We however also recall that every  one of these succeeding administrations was partially a product of Obasanjo’s intervention and contribution.

In other words, we are now faced with a regular patern of unmistakably sadistic behavior in which Obasanjo contributes to the emergence of an administration only to end up placing himself at the vanguard of pulling that same administration down!

Obasanjo insisted that Yar’Adua becoming Nigeria’s President was a do or die affair. As soon as he found himself unable to puppeteer the Yar’Adua administration, he turned full circle, abandoned his protegee and insisted Nigerians must now follow Goodluck Jonathan!

Having praised President Jonathan to high heavens and made himself his campaigner-in-chief, no sooner did he turn against the same Jonathan with unbridled hatred and personalised opposition when he found Jonathan too independent-minded to be remotely controlled from Otta Farm!

Thus, he embraced incumbent President Buhari as President Jonathan’s preferred successor, telling every Nigerian who cared to listen that Buhari was going to be the answer to all our problems.

Now this same Buhari he highly recommended to us, he now wants us to write off as a clueless, clannish election rigger determined to destroy Nigeria.

The truth is that if we are foolish enough to listen to Obasanjo this time around and make the mistake of making Atiku our President, we can be guaranteed that by this time four years hence, Obasanjo would be taking him to the cleaners and exhorting us to shop for another leader, not of our own choice but as usual, one of his own choice!

If Obasanjo is always bringing us persons who, in his own estimation, invariably turn out to be incompetent, below par and never good enough for a second term in office, then there must be something quite wrong with Obasanjo’s judgment and ability to assess character and potential!

In that case, Obasanjo is the very last person any sane human being should go to for directions to an able, capable and appropriate leader, after all, upon his own admission he miserably lacks the ability to point us in the direction of a leader we can rely on!

So having proved himself a woeful failure at leadership recruitment, we must, as a matter of overriding national importance, ensure that this time around, we studiously ignore the admonitions of Obasanjo and roundly reject his preferred candidate, Atiku Abubakar, if at all we know what is good for us!

We accordingly urge all sensible Nigerians to be bold, forthright and logically astute enough this election cycle to totally reject anyone and anything coming from Olusegun Obasanjo having had more than enough opportunity to have learnt our lessons that nothing lastingly good can ever come from him.

We have listened enough to Obasanjo in this country; now is the time to listen to ourselves.

If only to prove the point that we are not part of the chickens he is training at Otta Farm, we must reject Atiku and vote for Buhari!
