ENUGU—THE Ebonyi South senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prince Onu Nweze has alleged that Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state wants to assassinate him for reasons best known to the governor.

Nweze, who hails from the same community, Uburu, as Umahi, in a press conference in Enugu  yesterday, narrated how the governor with a retinue of aides, truck load of soldiers, police and thugs swooped on his compound at about 2:30pm last Saturday, after announcement had been made about the postponed election and almost assassinated him together with his nephews present in his house.

Nweze narrated: “What happened was unfortunate. At about 2:30pm on Saturday, I was almost assassinated by Governor Dave Umahi. I was about leaving my house when I saw a truck load of military men, then I saw the governor inside my house with his aides including his younger brother, Austin Umahi and I quickly told the soldiers that this is not a friendly visit and asked them to leave my house. While I was in touch with Lt Commander Funsho Agwair whom I requested his intervention, the Governor was in a white Honda car. It was a planned attempt to assassinate me.

Gov. Umahi vows to work with fear of God, if re-elected

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Awotinde Awosola however denied the incident was an assassination attempt but an attack by the governor’s convoy.

Awosola said: “The governor’s convoy was passing and some boys of the governor attacked him but he was rescued from them. I was personally there. We are on the trail of the culprits and we are going to get them.”

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Umahi, Mr Emmanuel Uzor in his reaction said: “The governor was on routine inspection during the day when suddenly a gunshot was heard around the area. He was with the DPO of Uburu, his security details and some soldiers and they decided to know what was happening.

“On getting there, they discovered that he was held hostage by some thugs who apparently wanted money from him over the failed election. So, they decided to rescue him and took him to the police station. It has nothing to do with the governor. It is unfortunate that he is now claiming that he was attacked by the same people that rescued him.”
