By Alemma Aliu

BENIN CITY—A Benin group Edo Ni’ibaromi has frowned at the recent purported celebration of one year anniversary of a purported Ijaw monarch in Gelegele community in Ovia North East local government area of Edo state describing it as an affront on the Benin monarch and the state government as they said the said monarch has never been recognized by the state government but was even declared` for prosecution one year ago.

The group also frowned at how the state government is treating the alleged non existing monarch with kid gloves by inviting him and his kinsmen for a meeting over the renaming of the planned seaport from Gelegele seaport to Benin River port.

A statement released to journalists in Benin City yesterday and signed by its president Amas Edobor and seven others said the Ijaws in Benin area were laying claim to what is not their own as they said the issue of the ownership of the area was taking up to the Supreme Court where ruling was given  in favour of the Benins.

The statement said despite the favourable court rulings, the Benins chose to allow the Ijaws to stay in the area but they have taken the generosity of the Benins for granted.

They alleged that while the Benins have taken the Ijaws with their threats of violence as peaceful settlers, the state government was harsh on Benin youths who last year protested peacefully against the activities of the Ijaws against the Benins and were arrested and thrown into prison custody whereas the Ijaws who went as far as trying to install a monarch were called for meetings.
