A group, under the auspices of Friends of Waziri Adamawa, FOWA, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos, has urged Nigerians and residents to use their electoral power to vote for for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Mr. Jimi Agbaje of the PDP, as President and Governor of Lagos State, respectively, in the 2019 general elections.
The group maintained that the duo remained the only credible persons that could lead the people out of the present economic hardship in the country, which it described as, “bondage.”
A chieftain of the PDP in Lagos, Chief Amos Olayinka, accompanied by two party stalwarts, Barrister Olisa Phil-Ashiri and Mr. Olufemi Folorunsho, onvehaf of the group made the remarks, weekend, while briefing the media on the commencement of electoral campaigns as scheduled by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, towards the February, 2019 general elections.
Olayinka, an elder in the PDP, blamed the present economic downturn on the mismanagement by leadership in the country, stressing that rather than moving forward, the country has actually been going backward, which the present government lacked the wherewithal to finding necessary solutions.
He said Nigeria had become a laughing stock in the the comity of Nations, hence, “the time is now to choose the right people that will pilot us out of this mess for prosperity.”
Expressing confidence in Atiku and Agbaje to turn things around for good, Olayinka continued: “I am a committed supporter of Atiku and Agbaje, no shaking. These are the kind of personalities who can lead us out of this economic bondage we have found ourselves. I have no doubt about it.
“20 years ago, China was in this kind of situation Nigeria is today. Look at where China is today. It’s because they were able to put good leaders with capability to move the country forward and today United States of America can’t toy with China. They (China) are not magicians to achieve the feat. Therefore, we don’t have to break the country apart to achieve same.
“This is the situation I want Nigeria to be and its Atiku and Agbaje who can put us in that kind of position. These are purposeful, tested and trusted hands Nigerians can handover Nigeria to for prosperity.
“The truth must be said, since the assumption of the present administration, Nigerians have gone hungry and angry. These are signs of ugly things to come if care is not taken by the electorate and Nigerians in general.
“We need leaders who can improve on the lives of average Nigerians and not only on godfathers and party leaders and members alone.”
On the fight against corruption, the group maintained that if mechanism of checks and balances were created in the polity, it would automatically kill corruption “and not the hogwash we are having, in the case of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the likes.”
On alleged corruption against Atiku by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his book, Phil-Ashiri, dismissed the statement, describing it as “Obasanjo’s personal view, he is not the conscience of the nation.”
He said: “It will be pretentious to say that Atiku has not performed creditably as Vice President for eight years. His antecedents are there for the people to see. Devoid of sentiment, Atiku created the economic team for Obasanjo which performed very well, in which Obasanjo also led credence to. Obasanjo made the claims out of fear.
“It was during his tenure with Atiku in charge, that Paris Club wrote off Nigeria’s debts. We are not going to trivialise 2019 poll. These personalities, Atiku and Agbaje have done enough to warrant our thrust of Nigeria and Lagos on them.”
On the criminal records against Atiku in US, the group said all claims remained, ” unsubstantiated, unverified and a mere hearsay, as there is no criminal case or records against Atiku anywhere.”
Folorunsho on his part, undoubtedly, said Agbaje gas won the governorship poll, saying that all crisis that rocked PDP in Lagos had finally being put to rest and everyone is United more than ever before.
“We have gone back to the grassroots and they have assured us of their support. Thoroughly, the grassroots will give us the edge over All Progressives Congress,APC, Just Sanwoolu, this time around. We will demystify the myth around Asiwaju Bola Tinubu this time around.
“APC did not beat us formally in 2015. When they saw the close tie, they had to go underground to do whatever they did to win because they underrated Jimi Agbaje. We will redouble our strategy this time so that we will not be caught napping again.”
