CALABAR—An unidentified girl, aged 17, who was raped and abandoned by unknown persons, has been confirmed dead.
Vanguard learned that the girl, who was rescued Saturday, July 21, around the U. J. Esuene Stadium by Oando Filling Station, Calabar, has passed on at University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH.
Speaking with Vanguard, Mr. Kebe Ikpi of Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, BRCI, a non- governmental organisation that specialises on child rights, said the 17-year-old victim was taken to UCTH after his attention was drawn to the development by a lady.
According to him, the Cross River State team of Child Protection Network, CPN, received a call from a woman about a girl found lying on the roadside around stadium.
He said: “We rescued a girl we suspect has been abused and left to die. She was dumped at stadium by Oando Filling Station.
“When we received the call, we met her unconscious.
“We called the Police and her to General Hospital. They refused to attend to her. After over 40 minutes of no attention, we took her to Police clinic where she was again rejected.
“Finally, we settled for the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. The doctors quickly commenced treatment to revive her. I visited everyday to replace her supplies and got update on how she was doing.
“Two days ago she showed signs of regaining consciousness. We were hopeful that she would regain consciousness to tell us what happened to her.
“Unfortunately, we never got the opportunity to know her name or what happened to her. We don’t know her family and we had put out word for anyone missing a family member to contact us. She passed on yesterday.”
When contacted, Police Public Relation Officer in the state, Irene Ugbo, said she was not aware of the case as it was not reported officially to any station.
