A  Magistrates Court in Minna has ordered that two students of Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Jibrin Attahiru, Idris Usman and another from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Idris Usman, be remanded in prison custody for causing the death of their fellow student for allegedly stealing an HTC smartphone.

The three students are standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, contrary to sections 97 and 221 of the penal code law.

Police Prosecutor, Sgt John Steven, told the court that one Mohammed Aliyu, Chief Security Officer of IBB university Lapai, had reported the matter at the station on July 24,  and suspected the trio to be behind the death of the deceased.


The Prosecutor also told the Court that    the complainant had alleged that on July 23, the accused persons suspected one Mubarak Sanusi, a student of the same institution, of having stolen an HTC handset, valued at N32, 000, belonging to one of them.

He said the accused persons picked up Sanusi and took him to their lodge where they beat him up and locked   him inside the toilet for two days.

The deceased was said to have sustained various degree of injuries as   result of the beating and eventually gave up the ghost, while being rushed to General Hospital, Lapai, the following day.

The three suspects pleaded not guilty when the charges were read   to them.

The prosecutor thereafter prayed the court for adjournment to give room for further investigations.

Magistrate Fati Auna then ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison and adjourned the case till Sept.3, 2018.
